For Twitch streamers

A CPA for Twitch streamers who knows subs, bits, and sponsorship money are three different things.

Subscription revenue, bits, direct donations, sponsorship deals, YouTube VODs, and whatever your Discord and Patreon are doing. Streaming income is lumpy, multi-source, and reported inconsistently. We build the books and the tax plan that hold up anyway.

The mechanics

Streaming income is lumpy. Your tax plan should be built for that.

A big raid month and a quiet month can differ by 5x. Flat percentages and last-year-times-four both break under that kind of variance.

Subs, bits and donations do not share one paper trail

Platform revenue, third-party tip processors, and sponsorship wires all arrive through different rails and get reported differently. We map every rail to your books so the total on your return matches the total that actually hit your accounts.

Lumpy income breaks flat set-aside percentages

Setting aside a fixed percentage every month is fine until a sponsorship month triples your income and pushes you into a higher bracket. We set the percentage against a projected full-year picture and revisit it mid-year, so a big month does not quietly create a five-figure April surprise.

Your setup is a capital asset question

PCs, capture cards, cameras, lighting, streaming software, and the room they live in are real deductions — but the right treatment depends on cost, useful life, and whether the space qualifies. Guessing here either leaves money on the table or creates an exposure. Neither is necessary.

Most streamers are multi-platform before they realize it

The Twitch channel is rarely the whole business. Once the VOD channel, the Patreon, the Discord, and the merch store are live, you have a multi-entity conversation on your hands — and an S-Corp question worth actually modeling.

Does this sound familiar?

You built something that works. The system underneath it has not caught up.

Your income swings 5x between a sponsorship month and a quiet one, and you set aside the same percentage regardless.
Subs, bits, and tips arrive through three different processors and land in your books as one word: income.
You spent five figures on your setup this year and nobody has told you how it gets deducted.
You stream from a dedicated room at home and have never claimed a home office.
Your Patreon, your VOD channel, and your merch store are all growing and none of them are in the same set of books.
You had your best year ever and the only tax advice you have received came from chat.

Trent has been a great partner over the years as I've been building my financial planning practice. Not only for me personally, but also with clients when they need a new CPA or have a complicated situation like buying or selling investments, such as rental properties or a concentrated stock sale. He's always great about providing options so myself and my clients can make informed decisions. Trent is also proactive with tax planning and analysis — that can be hard to find, but is extremely valuable especially when it comes to complex situations.

Frequently asked

Twitch questions we get every week.

Almost always yes. What a viewer calls the payment does not control how it is taxed — money sent to support a channel you are actively producing is generally business income, not a gift in the tax sense. The narrow exceptions are genuinely rare and worth a real conversation rather than a rule of thumb from a Discord server.
Generally yes on the equipment, and often yes on the space. Equipment used in the business is deductible, with the timing depending on cost and the elections available to you. A room used regularly and exclusively for streaming can support a home office deduction — the exclusivity requirement is where most people disqualify themselves without realizing it.
Two ways, and we usually run both. The safe-harbor route pays a set percentage of last year's tax and buys you penalty protection regardless of how this year lands. The annualized-income method tracks your actual income quarter by quarter, which costs more attention but stops you overpaying during slow stretches. For volatile streaming income the second one often wins.
