For Instagram influencers

A CPA for Instagram influencers who knows gifted product is income.

Brand deals, PR packages, Reels bonuses, affiliate links, usage-rights fees, and the UGC work that never appears on your grid. Instagram money is contract-driven and lumpy, and most of the mistakes we clean up happen before a single dollar moves.

The mechanics

The Instagram mistakes are almost never about the posting.

They are about what was agreed, what arrived, and what got documented. Four things account for most of what we fix.

Gifted product is the single biggest blind spot

Product sent in exchange for a post generally carries reportable value at fair market value. Truly unsolicited product with no obligation is a different analysis. The distinction is real, it is fact-specific, and almost nobody tracks it — which turns a two-minute monthly habit into a year-end reconstruction project.

Usage rights and whitelisting are separate money

A deal increasingly has two prices: one to make the content, one for the brand to run it as paid media. That second piece is sometimes characterized as licensing rather than services, which can put it on a different form than the rest of your fee. Same tax, different reconciliation — and a common source of surprise 1099s.

Agency and manager cuts hide the real number

If your agency nets its commission before the wire lands, your revenue is the gross and the commission is an expense. Booking only what arrived understates your income, distorts your qualified business income calculation, and makes your books disagree with the 1099 the brand files.

Net-60 terms cross the year boundary

A November campaign paid in January is next year's income. That is a genuine planning lever when it is deliberate, and a reconciliation headache when it happens to you. We decide it on purpose, in October, rather than discovering it in March.

Does this sound familiar?

You built something that works. The system underneath it has not caught up.

Brands send product constantly and you have no system for tracking what came with strings attached.
Your agency takes a cut before you get paid and you are not sure what belongs on your return.
You signed a usage-rights extension without reading what it did to your payment terms.
You are invoicing brands from a personal account with no contract on file.
You paid a photographer, a retoucher, and an editor this year and nobody has mentioned 1099s.
Your best month this year was four times your worst, and you set aside the same percentage either way.

Trent has been a great partner over the years as I've been building my financial planning practice. Not only for me personally, but also with clients when they need a new CPA or have a complicated situation like buying or selling investments, such as rental properties or a concentrated stock sale. He's always great about providing options so myself and my clients can make informed decisions. Trent is also proactive with tax planning and analysis — that can be hard to find, but is extremely valuable especially when it comes to complex situations.

Frequently asked

Instagram questions we get every week.

Usually, yes. When product arrives with an obligation attached — a post, a story, a mention — you have received something of value in exchange for services, and its fair market value is generally income. Genuinely unsolicited product with no expectation attached is analyzed differently. The practical answer is to track what arrives and why as it happens, because reconstructing intent a year later is far harder than noting it at the time.
The gross, with the commission as a business expense. If a $20,000 deal nets you $16,000 after a 20% commission, your revenue is $20,000 and you have a $4,000 expense. Reporting the $16,000 nets to the same tax in simple cases but understates your revenue — which matters for your qualified business income deduction, your self-employment tax base, and any conversation with a lender.
If you cross the threshold, yes — and it is $2,000 for 2026 payments, up from $600. Collect a W-9 before the first payment rather than chasing it in January. The deduction does not technically hinge on issuing the form, but the paperwork is what makes a large expense easy to defend instead of an argument you have to win.
